The Wilchester Men's Club is excited to open registration for The Spring Classic, our third annual softball tournament set for Saturday, March 6th, 2021. After two successful and thrilling tournaments in 2019 and 2020, we are excited to ensure that this community event will continue to be an avenue for fellowship through competition (because throwing washers just doesn't leave you sore enough the next day) while also advancing the Wilchester Men's Club's charitable pillars of Education, Youth/Family Outreach, and Neighbors in Need as one of our major fundraising efforts.
Location: Houston Sportsplex - Google Maps Link Due to COVID-related concerns the venue we used for the last two years is not available. Houston Sportsplex is a roughly equivalent distance from the hood as last year's venue, Cullen Park.
Time: Games will begin early to mid-morning (depending on final number of registrants and teams) and run throughout the day (teams will have extra players so that teams can field full lineups even when some players have conflicts).
Tournament Format: Blind draw, double elimination or pool play (targeting a three game minimum per team) tourney where the format will be determined by total number of teams
Eligibility: You must be the primary owner of a home in a neighborhood that maps to Wilchester Elementary or live in the pocket of Wilchester zoned to Rummel Creek Elem (no exceptions) and a current member of the Wilchester Men's Club (click HERE to join WMC!).
Cost: $100 for 2020/21 members of the WMC. This fee includes commemorative event swag, Sportsplex entrance fee, and that undeniable warm feeling that comes from doing good in the hood. FYI...Due to the change in venue from last year there will be changes to how food and beer are handled...we're still working with the venue to understand how this will look in 2021 but we do know we won’t be allowed to bring in food and drinks like last year. Regardless, the cost will not change and we will do our best to provide same level of fun as the past two years.
Equipment: Standardized softballs will be provided at each field. Bring your own glove, cleats (no metal spikes), eyeblack, Derek Jeter Jumpman wristbands, Aleve, and IcyHot. Bats will be available but you may also provide your own juiced-up poly-carbonate boomstick from the jimmy-jack bat rack.
Team Formation (please read):
- After two exciting years of undeniable parity, all returning and new names will go back into the proverbial hat and new teams will be assigned through a randomized selection process patented by Microsoft Excel. The goal is to keep teams as close to 12-13 players per roster as possible.
- As stated above, the teams are randomized every two years, as our goal is to balance building team camaraderie (for 2 years) and ensure new relationships/friendships are developed in this great community. The team you end up on this year will be your team for 2021 and 2022 (should you play again). This isn’t a two-year commitment, it is just the method by which we will form teams for the next two years.
- Our goal is to select teams on January 24th and communicate them shortly after so that there is at least a full month to allow for preparation/batting practice/stretching your back and hammies/Tommy John surgery/selecting appropriate athletic pants to match aforementioned wristbands/etc.
